Donna Hazell is one of the founding members of the Shuswap Dragon Boat Society/Friends Abreast which formed in 2002. Being a longtime breast cancer survivor, dragon boating is very personal to her. In her many years with the team, she has been president, been on committees ie. Breast Cancer Awareness, and an ambassador to try out the sport. I don't think I have ever met a dragon boat paddler who loves the sport as much as Donna. For the last twenty one (21) years, Donna has paddled with all her heart and soul. If you have ever been to a festival with her on board you will be energized by her vocal enthusiasm the last half of a race.
Donna has opened her home for many social events and a couple of PINK TEAS. We have prepared carnations for Breast Cancer Awareness month on more than one occasion at her home too.
Festivals have been her passion. She was the inspiration and driving force behind our participation in the LAKE MINNEWANKA BANFF festival. I'm sure if you asked Donna about that festival, she could tell you stories that would make you smile.
When Donna had to fight the "DRAGON" a second time, she continued to come out and paddle as often as she could. She is a soft-spoken and gentle lady until she hears the words "FINISH NOW" then she starts screaming loudly and paddles as hard as she can.
She has a great sense of humor and has a ready laugh. Most importantly, is her huge heart, caring and compassion for others. No matter what is going on in her life, she always has a card, a gift and a kind word for others.
Donna, it has been our team's privilege to have your inspiration and dedication all these years on the boat.
