In the News

Audrey Szafranski was one of the founding members of the Shuswap Dragon Boat Society.  During her time with Friends Abreast, she was an eager, reliable and active member until 2012.  Audrey rarely missed a practice or a festival. As well as being a breast cancer survivor, she lived with diabetes and focussed on keeping up her fitness.  After Audrey was no longer able to paddle regularly, she always came to the Salmon Arm Festival to take part in the Carnation Ceremony which was very important to her.  She was also very supportive of the awareness and support activities that the team participated in.  Audrey was never one to take centre stage but was someone that you know would be there when she was supposed to be and could be counted on to do what she said she would do.  Her quiet strength was always appreciated both on and off the water.

On August 4th, 2022, the Friends Abreast and Grey Grebes practice was in her honour.  Carnations were purchased and each member was given one to throw out on to the Lake.  After that paddle the family went up to the hospital and played "The River" and told Audrey what the dragon boat teams had done in her honour.  Missy Blair, her daughter, had known how important paddling had been to her mom.  Rest in Peace Audrey.
