Today, at McGuire Lake, I had the pleasure of meeting Rori, a retired OR nurse. What was exciting for me about meeting Rori is she worked under Dr. A.D. McKenzie, a general surgeon at Vancouver General Hospital many years ago. For those who have heard of Dr. Don McKenzie, this is his father. Rori shared a couple of her OR stories of how she assisted Dr. MacKenzie in breast cancer surgeries. As well, she was quite familiar with Dr. Don McKenzie’s success

Margaret Hinchliff (one of our paddlers) has just returned from NZ after attending an International Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Festival. She spent 12 adventurous days mixing and mingling with survivors and supporters. Thirty countries attended from around the globe with an attendance of around 3000 people. How awesome it was to make new friends from far away. Although there were many fun activities, these four highlights really made it a memorable trip.

Today, a group of ladies from the Shuswap Dragon Boat Society, Friends Abreast, prepared 300 carnations with tags to hand out to women as a reminder that it is Breast Cancer Awareness Month which means it is time to book your mammogram. Audrey Szafranski was one of the founding members of the Shuswap Dragon Boat Society. During her time with Friends Abreast, she was an eager, reliable and active member until 2012. Audrey rarely missed a practice or a festival. As well as being a breast cancer survivor, she lived with diabetes and focussed on keeping up her fitness.
